Modernism
The story I read was about a man who waited 2 years to come home after the war was over. He came back home and was expecting to get the best greeting in the world. The Problem was the town had already greeted the soldiers and weren't really worried about him coming back home so he got back home and wanted to tell his story about what happened in the war but no one wanted to hear it because they had already heard stories from the other soldiers that came back home 2 years ago. So after he wasn't able to tell his story he figured that things would be the same at home but things had changed so much that he couldn't tell what was what. All the girls had grown up and were almost full figured even his little sister had grown up. So since had been home from the war he did nothing with him life he just sat at home on his parents porch reading the newspaper, and watched the women walk by.
Disillusionment- He thought when he got home from the war that he would get a greeting from all the people back home but he wasn't because the people had already welcomed the soldiers. Direct Quote: By the time Krebs returned to his home town in Oklahoma the greeting of heroes was over. He came back much too late. The men from the town who had been drafted had all been welcomed elaborately on their return. There had been a great deal of hysteria. Now the reaction had set in.
So He Figured "Well since i came back late then i will get the best kind of greeting there is and i don't have to share mines.
Poems:
Richard Corey- He killed himself because his life wasn't all that it was perked to be.
Disillusionment- People thought that because he was rich that he was happy but money doesn't make a person. Direct Quote:
And he was rich—yes, richer than a king,And admirably schooled in every grace:In fine, we thought that he was everything To make us wish that we were in his place.
Mending Wall-
One man wanted to build a wall because he wanted to keep his apples from falling in the neighbors yard with the pines. But the other neighbor said that it really wasn't necessary to have a wall.
Direct Quote:Good fences make good neighbours
So He is saying that it isn't a bad thing to have a wall but have a good reason to have one.
A Dream Deferred-
In This Poem Langston Hughes was saying that what happened to all the dreams black kids had as a child? They didn't dream about being slaves, or even being traded for food. They had dreams of becoming famous people have a good life. Direct Quote- What happens to a dream deferred?Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun?
he is saying is a dream just a dream just something you have to think about what your life COULD be like but instead its the total opposite.
The Negro Speaks Of Rivers-
Langston Hughes was saying in this poem that there is a lot to learn about rivers. He was saying that they believed that our ancestors came from rivers. He was telling us that black people bathed in the rivers that are so popular in history right now and the pyramid out by the Nile river is their because our ancestors built it. Direct Quote-I bathed in the Euphrates when dawns were young.I built my hut near the Congo and it lulled me to sleep.I looked upon the Nile and raised the pyramids above it.I heard the singing of the Mississippi when Abe Lincoln went down to New Orleans, and I've seen its muddy bosom turn all golden in the sunset. So now he is saying if it wasn't for our ancestors none of the things that get talked about in history would exist.
Incident-
The poem incident was kind of self explanatory. There was a little black boy riding in the car in Baltimore and was looking out his window and just so happened in the car beside him and he smiled at the man and the man pointed at him and called him a nigger. Direct Quote- And so I smiled, but he poked out His tongue, and called me, "Nigger."
I saw the whole of Baltimore From May until December;Of all the things that happened there That's all that I remember. So he is saying out of all the things that happened in Baltimore the only thing he happens to remember is when someone called him a nigger.
